What a
welcome—and what a way to start.
We kicked
off the school year with Opening Session on the last day of July.
Opening
Session offers a chance for Sheridan staff—all of us—to get together and center
our work for the upcoming school year.
Opening
Session is a bit of a tradition in Sheridan. One of the really great things
about working in a small school district like ours is that we gather the entire
staff in one room and have a meeting. (I’d like to see them try that in Jeffco
Schools with 14,000 employees!)
This year
was my first as superintendent and it was a true honor and real joy to see the
staff come together and focus on the work ahead.
We set four
goals for the work this year—increasing academic rigor and choice; improving
safety and security; increasing cultural competence; and developing a solid
financial plan.
You’ll be
hearing much more about those goals as we move through the school year. But we
are doing all of this work under the tag line of “Safe, Smart and Happy!”
Yes, happy.
So the staff
decided to surprise me with an ample dose of “happy” with a flash mob on the
gym floor at Fort Logan Northgate School.
You can check out the video from someone’s cell phone here.
The song they picked was perfect, “You Got to Move It,” the big national
hit from the Madagascar movie a few years back.
Yes, we have
work to do.
Yes, it’s
hard work and a huge responsibility, to ensure Sheridan produces graduates who
are ready for whatever option they choose to do after high school.
But we can
have fun along the way. This flash mob put a smile on my face that lasted all
day. I will treasure the moment forever.
Thank you Sheridan staff for the very “happy”
welcome!
