Contract Approved for Incoming Superintendent Pat Sandos
The Sheridan
Board of Education approved the contract for incoming superintendent Pat Sandos
during a brief business meeting Sunday (June 10) in Colorado Springs. Sandos
will start on July 1. He takes over from Superintendent Michael Clough,
who is retiring after ten years at the helm.
The board also
approved the Master Agreement with teachers for the 2018-2019 school year.
Members of the Sheridan Educators Association ratified the agreement last
week.
The agreement
adds $2,000 to each of the cells on salary schedule and includes all steps and
lanes that reward years of service and completing or progress toward advanced
degrees. The increases yield a new starting salary in Sheridan of
$38,529. Depending on their current placement on the salary schedule, a teacher
may see anywhere from a 3 percent to 7 percent increase in pay.
The board meeting
was held prior to a day-long retreat to develop goals and plans for the
2018-2019 school year. During the meeting, the board also discussed and a
pending lawsuit that may be brought against House Bill 18-1306. That bill was
signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper on June 1. However, the governor also issued a
letter in opposition to a provision that was added late in the process. That
provision violated the Colorado Constitution’s prohibition on combining
subjects, the governor noted.
The bill seeks to
help youth in foster care reach graduation by providing money to pay for
transportation so they can continue education in their home school. The law
also provides flexibility in graduation requirements for youth in foster care.
However, the late provision would allow school districts much broader leeway to
pick up and drop off students who live outside a school district’s boundaries.
Sheridan board
members indicated their support to join legal action against that portion of
the law, which they said favored school districts with larger school bus fleets
and more resources. Gov. Hickenlooper’s letter also indicated that he expected
a court would void the extraneous portions of the law.
The board also
approved the consent agenda, which included three new job descriptions to
support changes under Sandos’ plan for reorganization.
