March 25, 2019: Early Childhood Education

Sheridan’s Early Childhood Center is one of the best in the country. 

 

How is that for a little-known fact?

 

First, I know that’s true because I’ve spent time in the ECC classrooms. The ECC staff is amazing. I feel better about the world every time I see those teachers in the Sheridan ECC and every time I get a chance to watch those children blossom.

 

But, second, and beyond my personal opinions, is independent data. Sheridan ECC compares its annual quality measurement scores to the national Head Start quality monitoring scores and the recent review found that Sheridan’s ECC landed in the top 10 percent of all similar schools in the country on two of the three broad measures.

 

On the third, Sheridan’s ECC did not finish in the top 10 percent but was still ranked about the national average. 

 

To choose one word—wow.

 

The national Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) measures teacher-student interactions. Each year, one-third of the Head Start grantees are reviewed. Of course, not every child in Sheridan’s ECC is funded through the federal Head Start program, but they are all learning together in the same classrooms. 

 

Sheridan ECC hires an independent, reliable contractor annually who uses the CLASS rating tool.  Recently, the 2018-2019 spring CLASS scores were compared to CLASSS data compiled from 350 Head Start programs. In my book, 350 programs is a pretty good sample size for comparison. Sheridan’s ECC scores were within the top 10 percent of all similar schools in the country under the “Emotional Support” and “Classroom Organization” categories.

  

In fact, in “Emotional Support,” with 7 being the highest possible score, Sheridan’s ECC received a score of 6.5. What does that mean? It means the classroom environment is positive and welcoming. It means there is laughter and enthusiasm. It means a whole host of things, but it means that the students are being nurtured and encouraged in a positive way.

In “Classroom Organization,” Sheridan’s ECC received a score of 6.4. What does that mean? It means there are clear behavior expectations, that good routines are in place, and learning time is being maximized.  Again, this category measures many things. But overall it means there is order and clarity to how the classrooms are run—something that helps students learn. (Yes, three- and four-year-old children are starting to learn; so are kindergarteners.)  

 

In the third category, “Instructional Support,” the score was 3. That was still above the national average (which was 2.89) but nowhere near where we want it to be. This is clearly the most difficult category of all; a score of 3.7 or higher would have also put Sheridan’s ECC in the top 10 percent of all the programs that were evaluated.  But if you know Sheridan ECC director Aimee Chapman or educational coordinator Jennifer Horn, you know they are hard at work supporting teachers and striving to improve this third category.

El Centro de Niños (ECC) Sheridan es uno de los mejores del país.

 

¿Cómo es este hecho poco conocido?

 

Primero, yo sé que este hecho es cierto porque he pasado un tiempo en los salones de clases en ECC. El personal de ECC es increíble. Me siento mejor por nuestro futuro cada vez que veo los maestros en ECC Sheridan y cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de ver a los niños alcanzando su plenitud.

Pero, segundo, y más de mis opiniones personales, están los datos independientes. ECC Sheridan compara sus calificaciones anuales de calidad con las nacionales de HEAD Start.  La revisión reciente encontró que ECC Sheridan fue en el 10% superior de todas las escuelas similares en el país en dos de las tres medidas generales.

 

En el tercero, aunque ECC Sheridan no terminó en el 10% superior, estaba clasificado en la media nacional.

 

Para decir una palabra: wow.

 

El Sistema nacional de calificación de la evaluación de la clase (CLASS) mide las interacciones entre maestros y estudiantes. Cada año, se revisa un tercio de los beneficiarios de Head Start. Por supuesto, no todos los niños en ECC Sheridan son financiados a través del programa federal Head Start, pero todos están aprendiendo juntos en los mismos salones.

 

Sheridan ECC contrata anualmente a un contratista independiente y seria que utiliza la medida CLASS. Recientemente, las puntuaciones de CLASS de primavera, 2018-2019, fueron comparatido con los datos de CLASS de 350 programas Head Start. En mi opinión, 350 programas es bueno para comparación. Las calificaciones del ECC Sheridan fueron en el 10 por ciento superior de todas las escuelas similares en el país en las categorías "Apoyo emocional" y "Organización de salon".

 

De hecho, en "Apoyo emocional", donde el puntaje de 7 es lo más alto posible, el ECC Sheridan recibió un puntaje de 6.5. ¿Qué significa eso? Significa que el ambiente del salon es positivo y acogedor. Significa que hay risa y entusiasmo. Significa una gran cantidad de cosas, pero significa que los estudiantes están cuidados y animados de una manera positiva. 

 

En "Organización del salon", ECC Sheridan recibió una puntuación de 6.4. Qué significa eso? Significa que hay expectativas claras de comportamiento, que se implementan buenas rutinas y que se está maximizando el tiempo de aprendizaje. Como en la otra categoría, esta categoría mide muchas cosas. Pero en general, significa que hay orden y claridad en el funcionamiento de los salones, algo que ayuda a los estudiantes a aprender. (Sí, los niños de tres y cuatro años están empezando a aprender; también lo están los niños de kindergarten).

 

En la tercera categoría, "Apoyo instructivo", el puntaje fue 3. Aunque estaba más alto de la media nacional (que fue de 2.89), no estamos contento con este puntaje.  Esta es claramente la categoría más difícil de todas; si ECC Sheridan hubiera recibido un puntaje de 3.7 la escuela sería en el 10 por ciento superior de todos los programas evaluados.

 

Pero si conoce a la directora de Sheridan ECC, Aimee Chapman, o a la coordinadora educativa Jennifer Horn, sabe que están trabajando duro para apoyar a los maestros y esforzarse por mejorar esta tercera categoría.
