Sheridan School District 2 News Article

May 6, 2019: Onward

Blog #13

May 6, 2019 – Onward

Hats off to the senior AVID students at Sheridan High School who renewed a longstanding tradition this year—Senior Signing Day.

All of the high school students gathered in the gymnasium on the last day of April—freshmen, sophomores, and juniors sat by class in the bleachers while seniors filled seats on the floor. One by one, each senior picked up his or her photograph and pinned it to a wall to indicate their college or career of choice.

Each of the 72 students had their moment in the spotlight, including an introduction to the assembly:

“Deja Acosta has played a part in managing two sports, AVID her senior year, guitar, and last but not least her internship at Denver Health with a general surgeon. She was accepted into Regis, Metropolitan State University, University of Colorado Denver, and Community College of Denver. Deja received $148,000 in scholarships. She is committing to the Community College of Denver!”

Or:

“Karina Ibañez Orocio contributed to AVID for three years, track and field, and AP Spanish. She applied to and was accepted to the University of Northern Colorado, Metropolitan State University, University of Colorado Denver, Community College of Denver, and Arapahoe Community College. Karina received a total of $24,360 in scholarships. She will be attending classes at Metropolitan State University!”

Or:

“Caleb Madrid contributed to Sheridan High by being a part of the Ram’s football, basketball, and baseball team. He received one honorable mention, second team all-conference and two all-star games for basketball. First and second team all=conference for baseball as well. Caleb has been accepted into Colorado Mesa University, Otero Junior College, and CSU Pueblo. He has committed to Colorado Mesa University and is planning to attend in the fall semester!”

The enthusiasm in the room was electric. The seniors were treated like winners.

And they are.

Not all are headed to college. Higher education is not the only valid path after high school. Some students will start fashioning careers in culinary arts, plumbing, auto mechanics, and more. Others are committed to the military.

It was very clear that, as a group, these students have set a very high bar for themselves. They know they are only in the beginning stages of shaping their lives, of setting their course.

What a fantastic event—and it’s so good to model success for the underclassmen, to demonstrate the opportunities that are available to explore if you leave Sheridan High School with a diploma in your hand.

Graduations bring such mixed feelings.

For every class that graduates, it’s an end to their time here in Sheridan School District 2.

But we call them “commencement” ceremonies because awarding diplomas represent a beginning—a major beginning to whatever is next.

The Senior Signing Day showcased 72 students who have applied themselves. They have worked hard. And they have learned a little something about themselves along the way. They know what sparks their curiosity, what lights up their world.

In some ways, “graduation” is just another step.

And in other ways, it’s the biggest step of all.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019 and thanks again to Sheridan High School for bringing back a fine—and meaningful—tradition.
