Sheridan School District 2 Awarded $931,000 BEST Grant to
Rebuild ECC/SOAR Academy Roof
Superintendent Pat Sandos today announced that Sheridan
School District 2 has received a $931,000 grant from the Colorado Department of
Education to fix the leaky roof over the building that covers the Early
Childhood Center and SOAR Academy.
The grant comes through the Building Excellent Schools Today
(BEST) program, which was launched in 2008 to address capital construction
needs across the state. The BEST program was critical in the construction of Fort
Logan Northgate School, which opened four years ago.
“We are extremely appreciative that the board overseeing the
BEST process recognized the importance of our needs, because they are real,”
said Superintendent Sandos. “The buckets catching water in our classrooms and
hallways are ample proof.” Sheridan Schools will contribute $547,000 as its
share of the project.
Chief Operations Officer Cindy Wright said the district will
immediately begin the process of identifying a roofing contractor, with an eye
to begin work in spring of 2020 to avoid any disruption to students and school
schedules.
The east side of the building houses SOAR Academy, the
district’s alternative high school. It was built in 1952 along with the gym.
The west wing was added four years later. Today, the west wing serves three-
and four-year-old children in the Early Childhood Center.
Wright said the district has tried patching leaks since
2010, but patches and the roof itself continue to fail. The SOAR Academy side
of the building is in worse condition, with water pouring in “like an open
faucet,” said Wright, after heavy rains. Eleven sections of the roof will be
fully replaced, five smaller sections will be repaired, and three sections are
in good condition and won’t be involved in this project.
