Work Session Recap
The Sheridan Board of Education
met in a work session Tuesday, April 23 and discussed a variety of topics.
Alice Terry Elementary School
Learning Walk Debrief
Following a recent Learning
Walk at Alice Terry Elementary School (Friday, April 12), board members shared
their observations.
Board member Karla Najera said
she was pleased to see the Instructional Support Assistants working with
students and assisting teachers. She also noted the energy in the classrooms.
Board of Education president Bernadette Saleh said she was concerned that some
of the posted learning objectives for the day were not written in a way that
made it clear for students about what was being taught. And board member Sally
Daigle said she found the students well-behaved and noted all the work that
staff has invested into improving social-emotional behaviors.
Superintendent Pat Sandos said he is pleased with the work at Alice Terry Elementary School this year. “The work is not finished but is definitely headed in the right direction,” he said.
Mission/Vision and Global
Statement
Board members worked on the language for the district’s mission/vision document as well as a Global Statement. Both documents will be considered for approval at the May 14 meeting.
District Accountability and
Advisory Committee
Chief Academic Officer Shirley
Miles, the staff representative on the District Accountability and Advisory
Committee, gave board members a brief overview of the recommendations that will
be formally presented at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 14.
DAAC is a state-mandated group of parents, community members, teachers and
district representatives.
Student and Parent Surveys
Director of Assessment Maegan Daigler presented results from parent surveys. Student survey data will be presented next month in an analysis that will combine both student and parent survey results by school. This will provide a global view of parent and student perceptions of how each school supports its families.
In all, 327 parents returned surveys—206 in English and 121 in Spanish. Survey categoriesincluded overall experience,
communication from school, instructional quality, environmental safety, and
welcoming atmosphere.
On a five-point scale (from “very poor” of 1 to an “excellent” rating of 5), parents rated the overall experience as a 4, “very good.” The survey found that parents would like to see more after-school opportunities for students (they rated those existing opportunities only as “good”) and improved opportunities for parent involvement, too (also “good”).
Parents gave a rating of 4 (“very good”) to the courteous and professional nature of office staff as well as the school’s dedication to their student being successful.
Safety and Security
Superintendent Sandos reviewed
the security threat that prompted most Metro Denver school districts to close
schools for the day (April 17). Sheridan School District was among those that
closed while law enforcement authorities hunted for a young woman who may have
been planning an attack on schools. Superintendent Sandos said state officials
from a variety of agencies are reviewing how decisions were made around that
incident. Every situation, Sandos noted, is different and presents unique
challenges.
Board of Education Calendar
Board members reviewed their
spring calendar, including Learning Walks at Sheridan High School and the Early
Childhood Center (April 26); the Sheridan High School junior and senior proms
(May 2); staff appreciation event (May 6); Learning Walk at SOAR Academy (in
the morning on May 17) and Sheridan High School graduation (beginning at 4
p.m.) on the same day at West Bowles Community Church; and SOAR Academy
graduation (May 22) also at West Bowles Community Church.
