Board of Education Work Session Recap
The Sheridan Board of Education held a work session this week (Tuesday, Sept. 28) and heard a variety of updates. The following is a recap.
Bond Refinance
Nate Eckloff, Managing Director of Piper Sandler, told the Sheridan Board of Education that the school district’s bonds were successfully refinanced. The interest rate on the outstanding debt dropped from 3.5 percent to 1.59 percent and the district will save an estimated $562,000 in all.
“A very, very solid refunding,” said Eckloff, who noted that interest rates have climbed a bit since Sheridan locked in a rate. “We timed this very well in the market,” he said.
Vaccine Mandates
Alexis Barrere, Instructor of Clinical Practices at Sheridan Health Services (University of
Colorado), spoke to the board about the idea of mandating vaccinations in the fight against COVID-19 and its variants. Evidence is becoming “more and more clear,” she said, that unvaccinated teachers lead to more COVID cases among students. Barrere said the focus should be on keeping students in schools to learn and that she supports the idea of mandating vaccines. Superintendent Sandos said the district is still considering the idea of mandate but for now will continue with stepped-up testing for all students and staff.
Early Childhood Center Visit
Board members discussed their recent visit to the Early Childhood Center. Board member Karla Najera complimented the center for being intentional about promoting literacy and for creating a welcoming environment. “I felt the love and dedication to students,” said Najera.
“It was a pleasure to be back in ECC,” said board member Maria Delgado. “Everything was so intentional that when you walk in you could see every single piece of it.”
Enrollment
Superintendent Pat Sandos reported that current enrollment is 1,151 students and that number includes 14 students at SOAR Academy who are preparing for the GED.
