Board of Education Meeting Tuesday, May 1 to Consider Superintendent Appointment

The Board of Education will meet Tuesday, May 1 to consider its next steps in the search for a new superintendent. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at SOAR Academy, 4107 S. Federal Blvd.

Board of Education president Bernadette Saleh made the announcement regarding the special meeting during the board meeting on Tuesday, April 24. To date, the board has not reached a consensus on selecting one of the three finalists who were announced in early April. Those three are Antonio Esquibel, Kirk Henwood, and Pat Sandos. Esquibel is a Denver Public Schools administrator; Henwood and Sandos are current Sheridan School District 2 administrators. The three were identified after a national search process that began in January and attracted over 70 applications.

Superintendent Michael Clough is leaving the district in June after a decade of leadership.

At its meeting on April 10, board president announced the appointment of Juanita Camacho to represent a seat that had been vacant for more than a decade.

Schools Closed

Also at the meeting this week, Superintendent Clough told the board that schools would be closed on Friday, April 27 due to the fact that there would not be enough teachers on hand to operate schools in a safe manner. Many Sheridan teachers are joining larger teacher demonstrations at the state capitol regarding the level of funding for Colorado schools.

Graduation Dates

Sheridan High School will hold graduation on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at the West Bowles Community Church, 1235 W. Bowles Ave. in Littleton.  SOAR Academy will hold its graduation on Wednesday, March 23 at SOAR Academy, also beginning at 6 p.m.

9 Health Fair

Sheridan Health Services will host a 9 Health Fair, offering a host of health screenings to the community, on Saturday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to noon. Sheridan Health Services is located at 3525 W. Oxford Ave. The phone number is 303-315-6150.

Student Survey Results

Pat Sandos, Executive Director of School Services and Student Behavioral and Emotional Supports, provided an upbeat review of data from student surveys. Under the Sheridan Way project plan, parent and student perception surveys establish a baseline to determine areas for improvement for district work.

Given the statement, “Teachers at my school care about me,” three out of four schools surveyed showed progress from the 2016-2017 school year to the 2017-2018 school year. Ninety-seven percent of students at Alice Terry Elementary School agreed with that statement in 2016-2017 and 100 percent agreed with that statement this year. That number climbed from 88  percent to 90 percent at Fort Logan Northgate School and 95 percent to 97 percent at SOAR Academy.

Data indicating the percentage of students reported being bullied dropped in all three schools where that question was asked, from 30 percent to 27 percent at Fort Logan Northgate School, from 24 percent to 19 percent at Sheridan High School, and from 24 percent to 20 percent at SOAR Academy.
