Superintendent Job Posting Specifies Ideal Candidate

During a work session yesterday (Tuesday, Jan. 30), The Sheridan Board of Education agreed on the details of its job posting as the search for a new superintendent enters the application phase.

Based on a series of stakeholder meetings last week and results from an online survey, the board identified the top ten traits it will seek in the ideal candidate.

Among them:

=         Possesses excellent people skills, presents a positive image of the district and will listen to input and make a decision when necessary;

=         Possesses the leadership skills required to respond to the challenges presented by an ethnically and culturally diverse community.

=         Inspires trust, has high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and models high standards of integrity and personal performance.

=         Has experience recruiting and maintaining exceptional staff for the district and schools.

The complete job posting will be available on the district’s web site, through the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE) website, and from the search firm hired by the board, Ray and Associates, to assist with the search.

The deadline to apply is March 12.

In writing the job description, the board worked with Ray & Associates consultant Ricardo Medina, who facilitated all of the stakeholder meetings on Jan. 22 and 23.  The board members reviewed 128 survey responses from teachers, administrators, support staff, parents, students, and community members who were asked to rank some 30 quality and characteristics by priority.  Board members did little to adjust the results of those survey responses, other than to delete one characteristic that they believed should come naturally with being a good superintendent, “Is a strong communicator: speaking, listening, and writing.” Instead, the board combined two other traits to include in their top ten: “Demonstrates commitment to community visibility and is able to build consensus and commitment among individuals and groups with an emphasis on parental involvement.”

The board also reviewed wide-ranging comments from stakeholder meetings and another survey that asked about the district’s strengths and weaknesses.

Superintendent Michael Clough is leaving the district in June after a decade of leadership. The board is planning to select a replacement by mid-April.
