Sixty-Nine Students Graduate from Sheridan High School; “It’s Our Time to Step Up”

Sixty-nine diplomas were awarded to seniors graduating from Sheridan High School during

ceremonies held Friday, May 17 at West Bowles Community Church. Fourteen of those

graduates earned over $1 million in combined scholarships.

Valedictorian Maria Garcia Martinez said "not a 1,000 thank-yous" would be enough to show

appreciation to her parents for all their support. Martinez said she is still uncertain of her goals

after high school but will begin study at the University of Colorado Denver. “I might decide on a

different path,” said Martinez, who conceded that her high school was not flawless. “Mistakes

are opportunities for learning,” she said.

"You will always be members of the Sheridan family," Superintendent Pat Sandos told the

graduates. "Embrace that."

Superintendent Sandos also thanked the parents in attendance for their trust. “Family doesn’t

change,” he said. “We built this district on that family concept.”

Salutatorian Anira Watson, who had previously attended Denver Public Schools among some

90,000 students, said she appreciated Sheridan’s small size and personal feeling. Watson, who

played on the boys’ varsity baseball team, urged her fellow students to "adapt and overcome"

in the future. "We all have our sights set on improving the world around us," she said. “It is our

time to step up and own our direction.”

The ceremonies included a special tribute to Mary Lewis, who has been teaching music in

Sheridan schools since 1991. And Uriel Corral, who graduated from Sheridan High School in the

Class of 2018 and who is now serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq, sent a special video message to

his sister Brianna, who graduated this year.
