Sinceramente,

Michael Clough

Superintendent

Sheridan Students, Staff, Parents and Community,

Re:   April 27th, Non-Student Contact Day-Capitol Rally

As I am sure you have heard by now, teachers across the state are planning to attend a rally/protest at the Colorado State Capitol on Friday, April 27th.  Teachers are calling for increased funding to better support students across the great state of Colorado.  Tensions with Colorado teachers have been heightened by recent reports by the National Education Association heralding Colorado pay for teachers ranking 46th in the nation and when factoring in the cost of living, teachers in Colorado rank 50th.

District staff has carefully monitored the teacher absentee requests and at 4:00 p.m. yesterday, enough leave requests were submitted that we can’t safely staff our schools on Friday, April 27th.   Therefore, Sheridan School District will be cancelling all classes and field trips this Friday.   While most students will not be having classes all staff that are not already approved for leave will be participating in a work day.   All extra-curricular activities will take place as scheduled.  In the event that those events are changed, notification of cancellation will come directly from the school.  SHS has asked specifically to let people know that the SHS Musical, A Chorus Line, will take place as planned on Thursday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m.

The decision to cancel classes for students is challenging as we understand that families can be inconvenienced with child care issues.  We are sorry that this has happened.

Sheridan School District has been a key player in the fight for greater funding for schools.  The Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools have been instrumental in bringing the message to state legislators that greater funding is needed to support our Sheridan students to receive the education they need and deserve.

As more information becomes available, we will pass it along to the staff, students and parents.

*Please note: Jeffco, Lake County, Clear Creek and Douglas County will be having a non-contact student day on Thursday, April 26th but Sheridan will have school as usual on that day.

Sincerely,

Michael Clough

April 16, 2018

Dear Second Grade Families,

We are very excited to welcome you to Fort Logan Northgate.  We are already preparing for the 18-19 school year.  Our Fort Logan Northgate team is looking forward to meeting you and supporting your child’s learning and growth.  To begin the process we will be hosting two upcoming events.

The first event will be during the school day on Wednesday, May 9th.  Second graders will take the bus from Alice Terry with their current teachers and spend part of the afternoon meeting with their new third grade teacher, hearing about their schedules and the academic program. They will then take a tour of our beautiful building.

The second event is for all family members and will be held at Fort Logan Northgate that same evening, Wednesday, May 9th from 5:00-6:00.  This event will include pizza, a building tour and session with your new third grade teachers and administration.

We hope you can join us.  We are very excited to begin working with each of you.  If you have questions about the schedule for these upcoming events, you can contact our Family Liaison, Zayda Esquivel at 720.833.6845.  I’m also happy to meet with you.

Health Screenings for Adults & Children Offered

Denver, CO — We’re just around the corner from your opportunity to get affordable and convenient health screenings. Volunteers from our community will be providing a variety of life-saving health screenings all under one roof at Family Health Clinic – Sheridan.

At 9Health Fair and Sheridan , you are in control of your health. Medical professionals are on-hand to offer assistance and advice, but you get to decide which health screenings are right for you. Included at each location are:

=         Blood Chemistry ($35) - Provides information on your blood glucose, cholesterol, electrolytes, liver, kidneys, thyroid, and more. This screening can help you and your healthcare provider monitor and identify health issues such as diabetes and heart disease

=         Hemoglobin A1C ($35) - Measures your average blood sugar control for the past 2 to 3 months, and screens for diabetes/pre-diabetes

=         Vitamin D ($50) - Provides baseline Vitamin D levels, which is important for bone health and may affect other vital body functions

=         Vitamin B12 ($20) - Provides baseline Vitamin B12 levels, which play a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 deficiency may be a cause of anemia, numbness and other sensory issues, memory and mood impairment

=         Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) ($35) - Measures a protein produced by the prostate gland. After discussion with your healthcare provider, this screening may be recommended for individuals age 69 or younger, or those with a family history of prostate cancer

=         Testosterone (male) ($40) - Testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day. Levels are best represented when the screening is performed in the morning. Low testosterone levels in males can affect energy levels, mood and cognitive function, sexual desire, bone and muscle mass, and fat distribution. Low testosterone levels can be caused by many conditions. If out-of-range, seek further evaluation to screen for other underlying issues such as sleep apnea, depression, opiate and other drug use, liver disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders and others.

=         Testosterone (female) ($40) - Consider this screening if you are concerned by excess facial and body hair, acne, and/or irregular menstrual cycles. Low testosterone levels in females often do not indicate a problem or require treatment or supplementation

=         Blood Cell Count ($25) - Measures white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Screens for your body's ability to fight infection, anemia, some clotting disorders and cancers

=         Colon Cancer Screening Kit ($30) - This take-home/mail-in kit checks for human blood in the stool. Screens for colon cancer and colon polyps, and may indicate hemorrhoids or colon inflammation

Based on the most current research findings, the 9Health Fair Medical Advisory Committee has determined that fasting is not required (optional) for blood screenings. To best prepare for a blood draw, drink plenty of water and continue to take prescription medications. People with diabetes should not fast. Check with your medical provider for specific recommendations.

Each 9Health Fair also offers a variety of free screenings such as Blood Pressure, Vision and Oral Health screenings for adults and youth, Bone Health, Stress Assessments and more.  These screenings vary by location. Select fairs also offer free health screenings for children. To find a location near you or to register online, visit www.9HealthFair.org.
